iPhone 5 Joining HTC EVO 3D With 3D Camera?

The Sprint HTC EVO 3D is expected to hit RadioShack on June 24th with a $199.99 price tag (two-year contract). While it does pack almost equal hardware to the Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Sensation 4G, it does have one secret weapon: 3D capture and playback technology. However this might now be shared by another rumored $199.99 smartphone, the iPhone 5.

A recently uncovered patent filing by Apple suggests that the company has been contemplating adding two or more camera on the rear of the iPhone, hence allowing for 3D pictures to be taken just like in the case of the LG Optimus Pad, HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has revealed a patent application from Apple called “Systems and Methods for an Imaging System Using Multiple Image Sensors,” reports AppleInsider. The blog goes on to explain that “the filing describes a system that would capture, process and render 3D images with the accompanying dual-camera hardware.”

3D camera for iPhone 5?

The patent was first filed by back in September of 2009, many months before the release of the iPhone 4 in 2010. Why Apple abandoned the idea of putting a 3D camera on the iPhone 4 is unknown, however with the recent surge of 3D smartphones hitting the market, the Cupertino-based company may reconsider it. Could we see the iPhone 5 adopting a 3D camera, or do you think its just a fad and will die off soon?
