10. Enhance Photos with Color Manipulation

You don’t have the advanced histogram that Photoshop does, but you can access the Color Balance, Levels, and Curves tools under the Colors menu in the toolbar. The closest equivalent of Photoshop‘s “Auto Tone” feature is the White Balance tool under Colors > Auto, and you’ll find the Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tool in GIMP‘s toolbox, with the familiar stamp and bandage icons near the bottom of the topmost pane.

9. Red Eye Removal

Those of us with lighter colored eyes always seem to look like the devil in certain pictures, and while you can remove those red eyes with a program like Picasa, you’ll get much better results if you take the time to do it manually. We’ve talked about how to do it in Photoshop before, and the process is identical in the GIMP—the only thing you need to know is that to change the layer’s Blending Mode, just click the “Mode” dropdown at the top of the “Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo” toolbar.

8. Whiten Teeth

Whitening teeth is easy in Photoshop, but requires a tad more work in the GIMP. the GIMP doesn’t have a “Sponge” tool like Photoshop, you can emulate it by creating a new layer, making saturation changes to that layer, and then using the eraser to isolate the teeth. You can find more information about this technique at this GIMP user forum thread. The GIMP does have a Dodge tool, however, so you won’t have to do anything differently there—it’s thelast button in the top pane of the toolbox.

7. Remove Blemishes

None of us are perfect, and if you want toremove a few blemishes from your photos, it’s just as easy to do in the GIMP as it is in Photoshop. Like we said above, the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools are right there in the GIMP, and the Resynthesizer plugin works much like the Content-Aware Fill introduced in Photoshop CS5. With a combination of all three, you can banish that blemish and make it look as if it was never there.

6. Brighten Image

Brightening up just one portion of an image is easy, no matter what editor you’re using. We’ve already discussed the tools necessary—mainly the Levels, Curves, and other color adjustment tools—so doing it in the GIMP is just a matter of learning the technique and knowing where the tools reside in GIMP instead of Photoshop. Check out our video tutorial to see how it’s done.

5. Create easy Image Reflection

you want a cool reflection effect on some text or other image, it’s incredibly easy to do, and actually just uses basic tools. Our video tutorial uses Photoshop, but you can flip an image in the GIMP from the Image > Transform menu, and all your eraser options are in the Toolbox, right where you’d expect them to be.

4. Extract Subject and apply a New Background

GIMP doesn’t have a separate Polygonal Lasso tool, but you can still select areas in the same way with the regular lasso tool. Instead of clicking and dragging, just single-click different areas to get a polygonal selection. In fact, in the GIMP, you can even mix freehand and polygonal segments in one selection by hitting the “F” key as you select. You don’t really have a Background Eraser either, but you can get similar effects by selecting the Brush tool, setting the mode to Color Erase, and setting the foreground color to the color you want to erase. The Magic Wand tool can also get the job done if your foreground and background are different enough.

3. Fix Distorted Image

Sometimes your photos don’t turn out exactly as you wanted, and to fix distortion, you can just use Photoshop’s Liquify tool. GIMP doesn’t have a tool by that name, but you can get a very similar effect by heading to Filters > Distorts > Iwarp. You can try out other distorts as well, but Iwarp should take you wherever you need to go. Remember, it can take a little practice to get good at, so don’t get discouraged with this one—it’s tough.

2. Change Specific Color

While Photoshop has a one-click color replacement tool, the GIMP doesn’t—but that’s okay, because doing it manually will probably get you better results (besides, it builds character). Like I said above, you can just use the regular Lasso as a Polygonal Lasso, and all the other tools in the video are available in GIMP right from the menus (as discussed above). The only thing that isn’t obvious is how to change the blending mode of a layer. In the GIMP, this is right at the top of the Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo toolbar, under the “Mode” dropdown.

1. Create Instagram-Like Effects

Unfortunately, emulating old-school Instagram-type effects in the GIMP is not as easy as in Photoshop. If you’re using Photoshop, you can just download a couple of Photoshop actions, but these won’t work in newer versions of the GIMP. However, doing them manually usually isn’t hard—our friends at the How-To Geek have already shown us how to make the Nashville and Lord Kelvin effects, and a quick Google search should reveal details on any other effect you want. If you’re lucky, you might be able to find GIMP plugins that simulate them, too, like this Lomo plugin or this vintage plugin, though there don’t seem to be as many that perfectly emulate Instagram’s filters. Doing it manually might take a little longer, but it gives you more control and, ultimately, a better image, so it’s worth the work.

-Peter Bargh

Having a little knowledge about how the camera’s shutter speed works can help you obtain pictures with more impact.
Photography derives from the words writing with light and a photo depends upon exposure of a light sensitive material. In a traditional cameras case the light sensitive material is film or in the latest digital cameras its a charge coupled device or CCD. The amount of light reaching the film or CCD is known as the exposure and this is controlled by two items on a camera – the aperture and shutter speed. The aperture is a variable hole in front of the lens that adjusts to let more or less light through and the shutter speed is a cover over the film or CCD that controls the length of time that the light reaches the film.

As well as their practical needs both can be used creatively in photography and in this technique we will take a more detailed look at shutter speeds. The shutter speeds of cameras can go from long exposures of 30 or more seconds to fast speeds of anything as short as 1/8000sec.

All cameras from the most basic point-and-shoot single use camera to the latest highly sophisticated digital SLRs have shutter speeds. The very basic compact models may have a fixed speed and theres nothing you can do with these. More advanced 35mm compact cameras have adjustable shutter speeds, but the speed is controlled automatically and you have no override. And then we go into the more sophisticated cameras such as the digital cameras and SLRs. With this type of camera you still have the automated control but also an override of some form to allow more creative use of the shutter speed. And its here where we can start to have fun.

By adjusting the shutter speed you can control the movement of the subject. A fast shutter speed will freeze the subject and a slow shutter speed will make it look blurred as the subject moves. You can also combine flash with a slow speed to get movement and blur all in the same shot. Lets look at the techniques one by one.

If you have no control over automatic exposure you can do a couple of things to help obtain a slow shutter speed. One is to use the slowest film you can find. In print film this is ISO100 but you can safely override the speed to ISO25 to fool the camera into increasing the exposure by two stops. If you dont have film speed override you can buy stickers to put over the cassette before you load it. Slide film is available in speeds down to ISO50. Again you can override this and set ISO25, but you must tell the lab to adjust processing to compensate.

Anther alternative is to place a neutral density filter over the lens. This is a grey filter that reduces the light value and doesnt affect the colour of the picture. You can buy them in 2x, 4x, 8x and 64x values.

Slow shutter speed with daylight exposure
There are a few techniques you can try here. The first is following the subject as it moves – a technique known as panning that we covered in detail in an earlier article in ePHOTOzine. You select a slow shutter speed and follow the subject as it moves, pressing the shutter button as you pan. If you get it right the subject will appear sharp as it hasnt moved position in the viewfinder, but the background will be blurred making the subject look as though its hurtling along. Try this on cyclists, cars, airplanes, joggers, animals and sporting activities.

Another method of creating movement is to keep the camera at a fixed point and press the shutter button using a slow shutter speed. This time the subject will be blurred as it passes across the viewfinder and the background will be sharp. This takes a lot of skill to get the detail right as the subject can often look too blurred resulting in a photograph with no impact.

The third technique is same as our previous example, but used to remove the subject. Its employed by architectural photographers who want to photograph a building without people getting in the way. If the shutter speed is slow theyll record as a blurred and distracting object, but if its extremely long the blurred person walking across the path of the view will be so blurred it wont even be recognisable and wont affect the picture.

A long shutter speed can be set at night to record car headlights as trails. Choose a position on a suitable bridge over a busy road and tripod mount the camera. Then fire the shutter with a speed of between one and 15 seconds depending on the length of streak you require.

Fast shutter speed in daylight
The alternative of selecting a slow shutter speed is to go for a fast shutter speed to do the exact opposite to stop your subject in its tracks. In this case you need to use a shutter speed faster than the speed of the moving subject, which varies depending on the direction too. If the subject is moving across the path at close range it will appear to be moving faster than a distant subject and a faster speed will be needed. And if its coming towards you, duck!
Using a subject freezing shutter speed is perfect if you want to stop a goal-scoring footballer in is tracks, freeze an athlete in mid air or an insect or bird in mid flight. Its less effective for cars or vehicles as it makes them look static.

Using flash to freeze the movement
Flash provides a burst of light in a split second that will freeze even the fastest subject in its tracks. Science and research photographers use this to study movement, by photographing subjects such as bullets penetrating their target and nature and medical photographers to study anatomical changes maybe a horses gallop, athletes jump or hummingbirds wing motion.

Slow shutter speed with a zoom lens
Another great technique, known as a zoom burst, will work with cameras where the zoom can be adjusted manually while the exposure is taking place.
You need to mount the camera on a tripod and set the zoom to either the short or long end of the focal length range. Then, with the camera on a slow shutter speed fire the shutter release and rotate the zoom barrel so it moves from one end of the focal length range to the other during the exposure. A steady uniform rotation is necessary to ensure a smooth zoom burst.
Most digital cameras dont have this option, but a similar effect using Photoshop Elements or a similar image-editing program can be created on a computer.

Adjusting the zoom lens as you make an exposure of a colourful flower bed creates a burst of colour.

-David Whitey

Well, there is no way to quit smoking in the first go. Smoking is not just a habit that makes you do it every now and then. I started smoking at the age of 18. My friends though started before me. I used to dislike the way my friends tried to look for an abandoned place to smoke, that was when I was in school. Now we don’t even care who is watching us smoking. Now friends try to find such abandoned place to do something else in fact. I try to hide the smoke smell before getting home, mouth freshener or “the mint with the hole” kind of toffies.Good thing, at least I want people to see me clean, the cleanliness however is dusted with a thick layer of dirt. I have been through a lot of counseling session to quit smoking. My sister have no idea about my smoking habit, else the counseling I have gotten would have been ten times more.

I want to share some of my tips and hope it works for you if not me.

1. This might shrink your nose eyebrows but… THE INNER WANT should be there. Being rigid with the decision has to be as strong as loosing virginity before marriage :p

2. This fact might help or motivate you.

Half of the adult smokers have quit, so you also can.

3. Know that it will take effort to quit smoking. Nicotine is addictive. Half of the battle in quitting is knowing you need to quit. This knowledge will help you be more able to deal with the symptoms of withdrawal that can occur, such as bad moods and really wanting to smoke. There are many ways smokers quit, including using nicotine replacement products (gum and patches) or FDA-approved, non-nicotine cessation medications. But there is no easy way. Nearly all smokers have some feelings of nicotine withdrawal when they try to quit. Give yourself a month to get over these feelings. Take quitting one day at a time, even one minute at a time—whatever you need to succeed.

4. Make a note of why you are trying to quit it. Trust me this really help. You might also be trying to quit because of the line we’ve been hearing since our childhood “Smoking is injurious to health”. Making a note will actually help you know what disastrous effect smoking actually has.

5. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

My dear friends you really don’t wanna know the fifth option and never would consider going for it. I hope not.

None of these tips helped me ever, the fifth did, and unfortunately it was a HEART ATTACK. I got a severe heart attack at the age of 31. I can not breathe like you currently are, I have to hate to carry along a breathing tube and a cylinder along to be alive. Now its your choice whether to go for the first four or the fifth option. I am not trying to scare you, I just want you to try and quit smoking. Think of a person you love the most in your life, think of blowing the smoke into their face and try to feel the way they might feel while you do so. There are millions of other option that helps quit smoking. I would love to hear you saying you have actually quit smoking after knowing my story. Having said that, I am not trying to get the credit for it

Please help yourself and your loved ones.

David.

The internet is one of the best drivers that will push a company to grow. Every time a new visitor reaches small business websites, they are a potential client. Growing the base of customers is the ultimate goal for every company both big and small. Getting the most sets of eyes to a site accomplishes this goal. Search engine optimization, or SEO for websites, is a set of techniques designed to get a company’s page ranked highly on search engines, like Google or , to help deliver visitors to the page.

The Most Important Item For SEO For Websites – The Keyword

Keywords form the basis of optimizing small business websites for drawing visitors. Key words and phrases used through a page are a large part of what search engines look for and they directly correspond to the words that a person types into a search.

Keywords are a popular topic when talking about SEO for websites. The key concept that many people tend to miss is to gear keywords towards making a sale. Think of what kind of person a keyword or phrase might attract. For example, if a keyword phrase would be likely to attract a student doing research, then that would be a poor choice. Keywords should meet a customer’s need and attract people looking to purchase your product or service.

Placement And Density

The location and amount of keywords used are both important for getting a high ranking. Preferably, these key phrases and words should be put at or close to the very beginning of a page. This includes titles, subheadings, and within content itself.

Density refers to the number of times a phrase is used within a page divided by the total words of content. Density can be a double edged sword, stuffing the same phrase into a page over and over again makes it unreadable to a human or overly promotional sounding even if a search engine likes it. There is definitely a maximum on the density of any particular key word or phrase.

In order to balance search engine optimization and readability for a human, a 2% density is an appropriate goal. This means that in a 100 word piece of content, the phrase only appears twice. One of the best ways to test to see if the content is still intelligible is to read it out loud or have another person read it. If it sounds awkward when read aloud or is confusing to another person, than the key phrases should be reworked for better readability. Also, remember that density is measured over the entire page, so if a particular area needs to be reworked, the key phrase can be added or removed from other sections.

Using SEO for websites is one of the best ways to drive visitors to a small business’ webpage. Best of all, once the webpage is established, it continues to generate leads indefinitely without constant maintenance.

Twitter is the name that rules the micro-blogging world and indeed no other name is known to be heard in the micro-blogging world. Its instant popularity has got it listed at the third place in the high trafficked website list. It is the biggest screen for reflecting the ideas of people all around the world. People tweet their ideas, what they are doing, their products, services, likes and all. Whether you have friends on Twitter or customers and clients, your tweets are indeed very effective in interacting with them.

Your Twitter account proves really helpful in your SEO as it gets you better visibility and interaction with your audiences and it is again a great way to get popularity and spread your word. But nothing is possible if you don’t have enough number of followers of your Twitter account. Unless people follow you, you won’t be able to market yourself better.

Here are tricks that will help you in getting lot many followers.

1. Write effective Bio
Your Bio lets others know who you are, what you want, what you like, whether or not it would be useful for others to follow you. Thus, your Bio should be effective, interesting, and eye catchy so that it attracts as many people as possible. Remember this is the most natural method of increasing the number of your Twitter followers.

2. Follow to get followed
How will others know you are out there on Twitter? They need to know that you are there in actually in order to follow you. So start following lot many people, indeed as many as possible and get followed by them in return. Yes, it is true that each one of them won’t be following you back but most of them will do that, so if you are following some 1000 people, around 600 to 800 will follow you back. But yes, you’ll have to follow those with whom you find some kind of similarity, like your businesses are similar or of the same niche, or you have similar choices or else you like something really great about the person whom you have decided to follow.

3. Retweet Retweet Retweet
Retweet all the links that you get from your friends. This will help you in two ways first, your friend whose tweet you retweeted will be happy that you spread his/her buzz. Second, your other friends will love to get something shared with them. Apart from links share other things as well, this will also be liked, it can be anything like a popular piece of news, something really entertaining, etc. But be sure that you retweet in this format ‘RT @friend’, so that they get the deserving credit.

4. Tweet What you’re doing tweet crazily
Now if you are a lazy and boring Twitterer who hardly posts anything, surely people won’t like you nor will they think of following you. After all, people follow Twitterers to read something interesting shared and talked about in their tweets. So tweet just anything, any joke, interesting story, and if you don’t have anything to share, simply share what you’re doing. Suppose you’ve just come home from some rock star’s concert, simply tweet it, or let’s say you are cooking something yummy today or you are simply watching your favorite TV show, let your friends also know about that.

5. Send automated Direct Message to your new followers to welcome them
Say thanks to your new followers and welcome them to your friend circle. The best way to have it done is by using some automated software as this way you won’t miss sending message to anyone and all your new followers will always be messaged on your behalf. This will ensure that they won’t run away thinking that you don’t deserve their following you, instead they’ll feel grateful that you respect their following you.

6. Connect your Twitter page with your other social networking profiles
Have your Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn profiles connected with your Twitter profile page as it will enhance you already existing network of people and friends.

Driving yourself nuts trying to figure out how to take photos from the Facebook for iPhone app? Don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s them. Unlike iOS, you just can’t tap, hold and select Save Image from a pop up. That functionality just doesn’t come with the Facebook app. But don’t worry, we have a work around and we’re going to share it with you, after the jump.

Here’s how to quickly and easily save photos from Facebook to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad camera roll.

Launch the Facebook app.

Go to the picture you would like to have saved to your iPhone.

Press and hold the Home button and then quickly press the Sleep/Wake button. (Yes, you’re taking a screenshot!)

Now, go to your Camera Roll and you will find the image that you just saved.

Why this feature was not built into the app originally, I am not sure, but this is a quick and easy way to get all the pictures you want off of the Facebook app.

Both the iPhone and iPad do phenomenal a job of displaying the photos you take with them, but how do you get your existing photos, the ones on your computer, onto your iPhone and iPad? iTunes is the answer, and we’ll show you how, after the break!

Syncing with iPhoto on Mac

Using iPhoto is my favorite choice for transferring photos from Mac to iPad because it offers the most options. You have the ability to sync all albums, events (dates), and faces (people based on facial recognition), or individually choose which combination of albums, events, and faces that you want to sync.

Organize your photos in iPhoto

Plug in your iPad or iPhone into your Mac via the USB to dock cable.

Open iTunes (if it doesn’t open automatically)

Check the box to “Sync Photos From”

Choose iPhoto from the drop down menu

Select which options you prefer

Click sync

Syncing with folders on Mac or Windows

If using you’re using Windows, or if you’re using a Mac but you prefer not to use iPhoto, you can sync iTunes with a folder on your computer. If you want multiple albums on your iPad, I recommend placing the individual folders into a larger folder. In this folder, you can have more subfolders than you desire to sync with your iPhone and iPad because you can individually select which subfolders you want in iTunes.

Organize your photos in iPhoto or folders

Plug in your iPad and open iTunes

Click the Photos tab

Check the box to “Sync Photos From”

Select “Choose folder…” from the drop down menu

Browse to the desired folder

Select which options you prefer

Click sync

Depending on how many photos you’re syncing, both methods have the potential to take some time.

There you have it! Now you can carry around those thousands of photos you have stored on your computer and show them off on your iPhone or iPad’s beautiful display.

Want to know how to find the closest sushi restaurant, or pizza, or who to call to make a reservation when it’s your anniversary and you completely forgot to make a reservation? Never fear, the native Google Maps app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is here! We’ll show you how it can save the day — or at least save yourself from pizza famine — after the break!

Launch maps

Get your current location by tapping the arrow button at the bottom left.

Using the search field at the top right, type in the type of food you want, the name of the restaurant you’re looking for, or anything you can remember about the address. For example, I’m in New York City near Broadway and Reade Street and I’m in the mood for Pizza. Typing “pizza” will then search the environs for the nearest pizza joints and drop a pin on their precise locations.

Tap the pins to get more information. You can click the small blue chevron to bring up more information about your chosen pizza place, and if it has a Google Streetview icon on the left, you can even see the place and its surroundings!

Tap the link to the homepage of the restaurant, or if you’re on an iPhone, simply tap of the phone number to call it right up (so they can have your pie hot ‘n ready for you when you get there).

Finally, tap the “Directions to Here” button at the bottom of the info page and select if you are driving, taking public transit or walking with estimated time it takes to get there.

That’s it, a few simple steps to find the food, Starbucks, burger joint, pizza place, or 5-star restaurant of your choice, all right on your iOS device! If you have any other Maps tips, let us know in the comments!
